Match Report Written by Naomi Duncan

The Quines travelled to Catto park to face Peterhead Ladies for their final game of the league.

After a minor change to the line-up, the Quines’ squad was led onto the park by Captain Kirsty “Jynx” Coghill and Vice-Captain Zia “ Zazzles” Bartlett ready to play with a strong winning mindset.

The squad were set ready to receive the first kick of the game. With a strong take the girls managed to play the ball up the field to get their first try in the first 7 minutes of the game. “Jynx” took control and called ‘green’ to alert the backs to play the ball into the space in front, and with a miss pass from Naomi “Slam” Duncan, Oonagh Murray managed to outrun the opposition’s winger all the way to the try line. Conveniently, she scored right under the posts to help Quines superstar kicker “Slam” score her first ‘in a while’ conversion bringing the score to 0 - 7.

10 minutes later, and with a backs attack from the blind side called by “Jynx”, Mhairi ’Road Runner’ MacPhail managed to use her superstar hand off against her opposite number and found a gap to the try line after successfully stepping Peterhead’s speedy fullback. The fight wasn’t quite over as Peterhead managed to make a tackle on our “Road Runner”, but she managed to reach out and gain her team the well deserved 5 points. This brought the score to 0 – 12 with a standard miss from our kicker “Slam” who was on target, but lacked power.

32 minutes in and ‘Shire brought their attack right up to the try line where “Jynx”, the Sphinxy Cooghill, passed a quick ball to Oonagh ‘All the Trys’ Murray to the far left of the pitch where she nipped over the try line bringing the ‘Shire score to 0 - 17.

Memorable highlights from the first half include a dominating scrum for our strong forward pack and Chloe ‘Wannabe Rollie’ McGregor’s strong run towards the try line that was disallowed for an over excitable flag boy..

The first half finished off with Peterhead scoring their first try in the far left corner which they didn’t manage to convert keeping the competition in play.

HT: 5 - 17

At half time some good feedback from Head Coach Greame ‘Good with Names’ Buchan to help the girls refocus and switch on for the second half. Both wingers were switched with the fresh legs of Jenny Ross and Nerea “Sleepy Head” Eizagirre for their first ‘Shire appearance. Victoria Boulind came on as a flanker and powerhouse Bronwen “I am Actually Tom Jones” Mullinor switched into the front row to allow Eilidh ‘Never Misses a Tackle’ Webster at Number 8.

7 minutes into the second half ‘Shire chose to take the penalty kick instead of going for the try taking the score to 5 - 20 thanks to a calm and powerful strike from “Jynx”.

After the inspirational half time talk Quines upped their lines speed to combat Peterhead’s fierce attacks. Which seen some much improved low tackles from Zia, Iona McBeath, Aoife Murray and Kristina Birbalaite. After conceding a second try to Peterhead, the Quines amped up their hunger. ‘Shire started turning over the ball at Rucks and forming some more structured forward play taking us close, but not over their try line. In the last few seconds of play Peterhead scored their last and final 5pts taking the score to 15 - 20.

Both sides finished on a high as clear improvement has been made from both teams since the first two games had been played.
