Last Saturday Aberdeenshire Quines made their first trip up to their neighbours, Peterhead Ladies.

The first Day of Autumn brought in a cold wind driving both teams to battle against the strengthening north wind.

Peterhead Kicked off to start this historic match. Not only was it the Quines’ first head to head on Catto turf, but it stood as Peterhead Ladies’ first home match in North League. Peterhead proudly fielded a strong formidable team to hunt down our Big Cat Family. Within first ten minutes Quines with strength and speed raced up the pitch, quickly getting the ball through the hands, out to our speedy winger Oonagh Murray. Our first try of match was secured. Our mighty kicker and Vice Captain, Naomi “Slam” Duncan, kicked the conversion, but the north wind had other plans.

Hungry for more tries the Quines applied good pressure. Our Captain, Maedbh “Mav” Smyth, turned over the ball. With the ball back in the Quines’ hands our Number 5, Shannon “Twinkle Toes” Maclean, with her strength and artistic moves smashed through scoring Quines’ second try.

With more sustained pressured for next seven minutes Quines fought hard for their third try. Our number 9 Justine Hanlon may be small, but is a force to be reckoned with and is growing in confidence with every game. She was joined by our new recruit Jenna Woods at 10. Our “Mav” soon followed storming through the Peterhead defensive line scoring a well deserved try. Jenna Woods Kicked the Conversion bringing our score to 0 - 17 at half time.

HT: 0 – 17

Second half roared off to a stellar start with our powerhouse islander, Jen Peace, scoring a try. Her sheer grit and determination must be a testament to her Viking ancestors. The try was scored from a Quines dominated scrum after training hard on the scrum machine on the Tuesday.

Peterhead gave us a good run for our money holding us off with their solid scrums, speedy backs and determined forwards.

Quines turned-over possession again in Peterhead’s half. With quick hands, a solid break through the defensive line by our VC “Slam” and a quick pick-and-go from our Captain “Mav”, we scored our last try of the match. Converted by Jenna.

Peterhead hungry for points on the board, with an admirable determination and absolutely no sign of taking the foot off the gas, stormed through our defensive line from a scrum-restart near the 5 scoring a fantastic try.

FT: 5 - 31

The match ended before time due to injuries. We are very grateful to PHD ladies for being wonderful hosts and wish everyone a speedy recovery!
